Wildland fire personnel were victorious Thursday night in holding the fire within the burned area of the Bennett Wildfire in southern Black Hills.
On Friday, fire officials planned to continue securing and building lines while keeping firefighter and public safety at the forefront. Air tankers and aerial support were utilized to support ground units, as the terrain was steep and challenging to work in.
On Friday morning, 130 fire personnel were present from across the region, including those from South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Colorado. Multiple agencies and volunteer fire departments support this effort to suppress the fire.
On Friday morning, the fire remained at 330 acres in the Black Hills National Forest but was only about 10% contained.
The fire started by lightning at around 1:00 p.m. on August 15, 2024, and firefighters were dispatched to a smoke report approximately 8Â miles southeast of Dewey, SD, or about 8 miles northwest of Edgemont, SD, in Fall River County.
