A combination of dry conditions and strong winds helped fuel a brush fire west of Gary on Saturday afternoon, highlighting the ongoing fire danger across eastern South Dakota.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on March 28, the Gary Fire Department was dispatched to the fire after it was detected by the National Weather Service using advanced monitoring technology. Notably, the alert came before any local reports, allowing crews to respond quickly.

Firefighters from the Gary Fire Department, Clear Lake Fire Department, and the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and worked together to contain the blaze. Thanks to their coordinated efforts and the early detection, the fire was brought under control before it could spread further.

The incident comes as much of eastern and southern South Dakota remained under a Red Flag Warning on Saturday. The warning was issued due to a dangerous mix of low humidity and strong southerly winds — conditions that can cause fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly.

Officials are reminding residents to avoid outdoor burning during these high-risk periods and to remain vigilant as dry, windy weather continues to impact the region.
