Fire Concerns Increase

Updated: May 7, 2022

We continue to enjoy the spring-like weather with temperatures typically seen in April. But with the lack of precipitation and warmer temperatures, fire dangers continue to increase. Already, the National Weather Service has placed counties in south-central and southeast, South Dakota under a Fire Weather Watch for Sunday evening.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor buring is not recommended.

On Sunday, south winds are expected to increase to 15 to 25mph with gusts up to 35mph along with humidity levels as low as 15 to 25 percent.

Remember, a Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

The forecast for Sunday is calling temperatures to reach from the lower 60s to the upper 70s. Skies will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. South to southeast winds of 5 to 15mph with some locations increasing to 15 to 25mph.
