A surface low is forecast to move northward through the central areas of South Dakota and North Dakota this afternoon and evening. With a low-level jet expected to strengthen by evening and moist easterly surface winds present ahead of the low, these conditions will set the stage for more showers and thunderstorms, with some storms becoming severe.

After this morning's storms and showers, new thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon across the state along a cold front, as the ascent associated with an upper trough intensifies. The primary threats from these thunderstorms will be isolated strong wind gusts and hail, but a few storms near the surface low may exhibit enough low-level rotation to pose a tornado risk, particularly in the central and eastern regions of the state.

By this evening, the threat of severe weather is expected to decrease.

Looking ahead, there is a slight chance of isolated strong thunderstorms in the far southeast corner of South Dakota on Tuesday. The latest severe weather outlook maps can be found on our Severe Weather page.
