The South Dakota Department of Transportation closely monitors weather conditions and issues travel advisories to keep the public safe. No Travel Advised has been placed on highways in and near the Pierre, Philip, Blunt, Onida, Agar, Billsburg, Bridger, Fort Pierre, Hayes, Midland, Nowlin, Powell, and Vivian due to iced-over roads and the extreme difficulty to travel on them.

Safety Tips for Driving in Icy Conditions

Driving on ice requires extra caution and preparation. Here are practical tips to stay safe:

  • Slow down: Reduce speed significantly to maintain control and increase stopping distance.

  • Increase following distance: Leave at least six seconds between your vehicle and the one ahead.

  • Avoid sudden movements: Brake gently and steer smoothly to prevent skidding.

  • Use low beams: Headlights improve visibility without causing glare on icy surfaces.

  • Equip your vehicle: Use winter tires or chains if possible, and ensure your windshield wipers and defrosters work well.

  • Stay alert: Watch for black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.

  • Keep emergency supplies: Carry blankets, water, a flashlight, and a charged phone in case you get stranded.
