Storm Gusts to 100mph and Ping Pong Hail

South Dakota experienced two days of severe weather, with damaging winds and large hail. Thunderstorm gusts reached up to 100 mph, as reported 9 miles west of Onida, SD. In the Onida area, trees were blown over, with one blocking a roadway. Near Cactus Flat, a semi was overturned on Interstate 90, with wind gusts of 93 mph reported in the vicinity. In central South Dakota, the Pierre Airport recorded an 82 mph gust, and some damage was observed in the community.

Then, on Tuesday, storms once again brought strong winds, with a 77mph gust reported three miles south of Corsica, SD. In Parkston, strong winds swept through the community, breaking many tree branches, blowing out a grain bin, and a 53 mph wind gust was reported at the Parkston Airport. In Freeman, trees were blown down, with one tree blocking a road. Then, in Hartford, thunderstorm wind gusts of 60-65mph uprooted a couple of trees.

Thunderstorms also brought large hail, with 1.50 inch hail dropped from a storm about two miles west of Clearfield on Tuesday. Five miles south of Gregory, hail to the size of half dollars or 1.25 inch in size was reported. Below are the storm reports from Monday and Tuesday events from the National Weather Service.
