Storm Reports

We had everything with this latest storm system from thunderstorms in eastern, South Dakota to an ice storm in north-central, central, and northeast, SD, and even parts of western regions of the state. As colder air moved in, the snow began to fall with some locations receiving several inches.

As the precipitation started to develop on Wednesday, temperatures at the surface were below freezing with warmer, above-freezing temperatures above the surface. This set the stage for freezing rain and ice storm conditions. Many roads quickly become icy creating travel dangers for motorists and power issues as power lines develop ice accumulations. A couple of reports from Frankfort, Zell, Ree Heights, Faulkton, Ipswich, Leola, Bowdle, and Westwood Colony reported receiving half of an inch of ice.

Colder air then filtered into the area changing the freezing rain over to snow. Lemmon topped the reports with nearly a foot of snow report yesterday evening. Other reports were seven inches in Ralph and six inches in Pollock. Below are the National Weather Service's snowfall reports from 6:30 am this morning.
