Wintry Weather and Issues on the Roads

The first widespread winter weather impacted western, South Dakota on Thursday where Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings were issued.

Many roads across the west became slippery and one life was taken because of the conditions. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety advised a 2003 Ford Escape was traveling on US Highway 16A. The vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and slid across the slick highway, entering the oncoming lane. That vehicle was hit by another vehicle causing that second vehicle to go into the ditch and come to a rest next to the tree. The second vehicle was driven by a 66-year-old man, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the overnight hours, law enforcement in the Rapid City area advised motorists to stay home and many roads and city streets were slippery and icy.

Another storm system looks to bring additional winter weather to the region, this time impacting more southern and eastern parts of the state.
