The blizzard and winter storm conditions caught many motorists in whiteout conditions and blocked roadways.
Five people had to be rescued on US Highway 12 near Webster when their vehicle got stuck on the road. A South Dakota Department of Transportation snowplow had to be used to allow first responders from the Webster Police Department to rescue the five.

Out in the west, a driver of a semi tried taking a side road near Wall but got stuck in the snow. Emergency responders from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office reached the driver and got him to safety.

Many roads were impassable as large snow drifts could be found statewide. The Interstate System in eastern South Dakota was shut down for nearly two days until crews were able to get the roads back open.
