Blizzard and Wintry Weather

Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings along with Winter Weather Advisories are up for a good part of South Dakota as impacts from the storm system will amplify by this evening. For the latest details on your local weather alerts, please check out our Alerts page.

This morning, scattered rain showers are expected for eastern, South Dakota with a wintry mix or freezing rain for north-central, South Dakota.


As we move into the afternoon hours, more rain showers will spread over the east.



By this evening, widespread rain showers, and possibly a few thunderstorms will be across the east. The wintry mix of rain/snow, sleet, and freezing rain will be found in north-central and central, SD and spread into the southwest, SD with snow moving into far western, SD.


Then by the overnight hours, widespread snow for the west with freezing rain/sleet in central and western regions of the northeast, SD. Rain showers continue for the east.

By Thursday morning, the precipitation will start moving out of the area pushing into North Dakota and Minnesota.


Besides the threat of precipitation, strong winds are also expected as Blizzard Warnings are up for north-central, SD. Wind gusts up to 45mph is in the forecast.



Significant amounts of ice are possible up towards Aberdeen and Redfield and over to Gettysburg and Eureka.


Snowfall amounts will be the heaviest in north-central, SD and going down towards west-central and northwest, SD. Below are the forecast snowfall maps from the Euro (ECMWF) and American (GFS).
