During July 28th's severe weather outbreak, the Sioux Falls National Weather Service confirmed three tornado touchdowns in south-central South Dakota.
The strongest tornado north of Bonesteel was rated an EF2 tornado with winds up to 135mph and tracked just over eight miles. Damage was reported with this tornado because it was on the ground for nearly 30 minutes.

Earlier, the same storm produced a tornado towards the northwest near Dixon. This tornado was given an EF1 rating with wind peaking at 110mph. The tornado remained on the ground for about 20 minutes and traveled 11.3 miles. The weather service reported that this twister did minimal damage.

In between these two locations, a small EF0 tornado was only on the ground for about five miles and traveled southeast for about 2.7 miles in open fields near Lucas, South Dakota.
This storm became a complex line of thunderstorms that brought powerful straight-line winds to southeast South Dakota, causing widespread damage. More on the damage, check out our earlier story, South Dakota Hit Once Again by Winds and Tornadoes.
